Set by:
The Snell Memorial Foundation, an independent U.S. nonprofit organization that develops and tests helmet safety standards.
What it means:
SA2020 is Snell's previous safety standard for competitive auto racing helmets. It remains accepted by many racing organizations. SA2020 helmets meet requirements for impact protection, fire resistance, roll-bar impacts, visor performance, and HANS/FHR compatibility.
Typically required for:
U.S. auto racing, including club racing, track days, HPDE, time attack, autocross, and other events that accept Snell SA-rated helmets. SA2020 is also accepted by many U.S. karting organizations for adult karting.
Common expiration:
December 31, 2030. Many racing organizations accept SA2020 helmets through the end of 2030. Exact expiration dates can vary by sanctioning body, series, or event.
Not intended for: Motorcycle use.
Always check your event or sanctioning body's current helmet requirements.
