HANS FAQ

What is the difference between the HANS III and HANS IV?

Both are injection-molded polymer devices with a 20-degree angle, rated SFI 38.1 and sold with two helmet anchors and matching tethers. The HANS IV adds a Small size, for drivers with a smaller collar, alongside Medium and Large. The HANS III also comes in a 30-degree model for reclined seats.

Is the HANS Ultra Pro worth it over the HANS III?

The Ultra Pro uses 100% carbon fiber with a hollow core, so it's lighter than the polymer HANS III, at about twice the price. Both share the same 20-degree angle and SFI 38.1 rating. Choose the Ultra Pro if saving weight matters to you, and the HANS III if budget comes first.

What is the difference between Sliding Post Anchor and Sliding Quick Click?

They are two ways to connect your HANS device's tethers to the helmet anchors. Sliding Post Anchor is HANS's original design, and Sliding Quick Click lets you clip in and out faster. HANS says both are equally safe, so the choice is personal preference. The Quick Click tether kit is also sold separately.

Which HANS device should I choose: 20 or 30 degrees?

HANS recommends 20 degrees for upright seats, such as sedans, stock cars, GT and sports cars, rally and drag cars, and 30 degrees for reclined seats in formula cars, single-seaters and sports prototypes. HANS also notes that drivers over 200 lb in upright seats may find a 30-degree model more comfortable.

Q&A

3 answered questions

  • Does it need a harness to work with a HANS Device / FHR or can I just have it on my shoulders?

    Guest

Does it need a harness to work or can I just have it on my shoulders?
    • No, you cannot use a HANS Device (Head and Neck Restraint) without a harness. The harness is what actually activates the HANS device, and without it, the HANS will not stay in position, cannot restrain your head or neck in a crash, and it becomes ineffective and potentially dangerous.
To use a HANS device safely, you must have:
      • A multi-point racing harness (minimum 4-point, ideally 5 or 6-point);
      • Proper shoulder belt routing over the device.
      • A compatible seat and mounting position

  • Are Bell helmets HANS compatible?

    admin

    • Staff Answer
Most Bell auto racing helmets are designed for use with head and neck restraint systems. Check the helmet certification and, as a rule of thumb, Snell SA2025 helmets will come with M6 threaded inserts that allow compatible anchors to be installed, while FIA 8859-2024 certified helmets will come with factory-installed HANS posts. Always verify the product description for the specific helmet you are considering to ensure it meets your racing organization's requirements, or connect with FAST RACER by chat or phone and get your questions answered right away.
