Racing suits are fire-resistant, not fireproof. They're made from flame-resistant materials such as Nomex and other aramid fibers that slow heat transfer, giving you time to get out of the car. Ratings like SFI 3.2A/5 and FIA 8856-2018 show the level of protection. Wear fire-resistant underwear underneath for added protection.
SFI 3.2A is the SFI Foundation's specification for driver suits, and the number after the slash shows the level of heat protection. According to SFI, a 3.2A/1 suit gives about 3 seconds before a second-degree burn, and a 3.2A/5 suit about 10 seconds. Check which rating your series rulebook requires.
You need an FIA 8856-2018 homologated suit for FIA-sanctioned events and many international series, while many US series accept SFI 3.2A rated suits. Several suits here carry both ratings, such as the OMP FIRST-S and ONE-S, so one suit can cover both. Always check your series rulebook before you buy.
Racing suits use European sizes, such as 46 to 64, or letter sizes from S to XXL, depending on the brand. Compare your height, chest and waist with the size chart on each product page, and leave room for fire-resistant underwear. If you're between sizes, contact us before you order.
At FAST RACER, racing suits currently start around $130 for single-layer SFI suits and run to about $2,250 for lightweight FIA homologated suits. Price usually reflects the rating, the number of layers and the weight, so start with the rating your series requires rather than the most expensive model.
