Snell/FIA CMS 2016

Set by:
The Snell Memorial Foundation and FIA, which jointly developed this children's motorsports helmet standard.

What it means:
Despite “2016” in its name, it remains the current Snell/FIA children's helmet standard designed primarily for motocross and off-road motorsports. It provides impact protection with a lightweight design intended to reduce the forces placed on a young driver's or rider's head and neck.

Typically required for:
Primarily youth motocross and off-road motorsports. CMS2016 is also accepted for youth karting by major U.S. organizations, including SKUSA and WKA, although CMR2016 is the version specifically designed for karting and other four-wheeled motorsports.

Always check your event or sanctioning body's current helmet requirements.

  • The Bell KC7-EV CMS Youth Karting Helmet is a lightweight option for young drivers, based on Bell's HP7 design, with enhanced visibility, aerodynamics and safety for racers starting their careers on the track.

  • This is the Extended Vision (EV) version of the Bell KC7-CMR kart helmet. The eyeport is about 20mm larger on the KC7-EV CMS, giving about 30% more peripheral visibility for a wider field of view and better awareness on track.

  • Key features include:

    • Construction and Technology: A lightweight composite shell for strength and reduced weight, a non-fireproof lining for durability, and an advanced ventilation system with 14 air intake and extraction channels to maintain airflow and cooling.

    • Wider Eyeport (compared with the Bell KC7-CMR): A wider eyeport is generally better for drivers who wear glasses. It provides more space around the eyes, making it easier to slide glasses on or off, reduces pressure on the frames from the helmet's padding, and minimizes fogging and restricted peripheral vision that can occur with narrower openings.

    • Anti-fog Visor: Optical-grade injected Double Screen Anti-Fog (DSAF) 2mm visor for improved anti-fog performance and visibility, with a hollow synthetic rubber gasket seal that keeps air, water and dust out of the helmet.

    • Compatibility: Works with a range of Bell accessories, including SE07EV 2mm shields in various tints, SV (SE07-SE077-SE06) pivot kits, rear spoilers and optional air intakes. Find them in Bell helmet accessories.

  • Certification: homologated to the Snell/FIA CMS2016 standard, designed primarily for youth motocross and off-road motorsports. CMS2016 helmets are also accepted for youth karting by SKUSA, USPKS, WKA and AKRA, though CMR2016 is the version designed specifically for karting.

  • Manufacturer Part Number: 1354001 (Size 51) to 1354009 (Size 59)

  • Compare every KC7 in Bell KC7 helmets.

  • The Bell KC7-EV CMS is a youth helmet accepted for youth karting by major U.S. organizations. Age and class rules vary by series, so check your rulebook before you buy.

  • It is not compatible with FHR anchor systems or devices, which suits karting where such restraints aren't required. Do not use this helmet for car racing or other motorsports disciplines where a HANS device is necessary.

Questions about Bell KC7-EV CMS Youth Karting Helmet - FIA/Snell CMS

Q&A

33 answered questions

  • What is the snell helmet expiration date?

    admin

    • As a general rule, Snell SA helmets are valid for 10 years from their certification date. For example, a Snell SA2025 helmet is good until December 31, 2035. When a new certification comes out, such as SA2030, those helmets are valid until December 31, 2040. Most racing organizations like SCCA, NASA, and NHRA follow this guideline. However, we always recommend checking your specific rulebook, as requirements may vary between different organizations or events.

  • How many years is a Bell helmet good for?

    Guest

    • Bell helmets do not technically have an expiration date; however, a statement from the Snell certification webpage recommends replacing any racing driver's helmets after five years of normal use. See Snell Foundation statement in the linked blog post "Snell SA2020 Helmet Expiration Dates Explained"

      admin

  • Are bell helmets snell approved?

    Guest

    • Certainly. Here is a comprehensive summary of potential certifications for Bell Helmets, tailored to their specific motorsport disciplines:
      • Bell racing helmets are certified to Snell SA2020, Snell SA2025, FIA 8859-2015, FIA 8859-2024, FIA 8860-2018, or more recent versions of those standards.
      • Bell kart helmets are certified to Snell K2020, Snell K2025 and/or FIA 8878-2024.
      • Bell youth kart or racing helmets are certified to Snell/FIA CMS, Snell/FIA CMR or SFI 24.1
Always check the product description to ensure the helmet meets the specific certification requirements for your motorsport needs.

      admin

  • How long will my SA2020 helmet be good for?

    admin

    • Most racing organizations, such as SCCA, NASA, and NHRA, accept Snell SA helmets for 10 years from the homologation date, not the purchase or manufacture date. This means an SA2020 helmet is generally valid through December 31, 2030. However, certain series, like NHRA, may allow use for slightly longer or shorter periods depending on their rules. Always consult your current rulebook, as some organizations may require newer standards sooner than others.

      admin

  • Can you use a motorcycle helmet for car racing?

    admin

    • No. A motorcycle helmet should not be used as a car racing helmet because it does not meet the necessary fireproofing and impact resistance requirements, such as Snell SA2025 or FIA 8859-2024 standards, nor does it provide for head and neck restraint systems. Car racing helmets are specifically engineered for the unique hazards of motorsports, including fire resistance and impact protection in confined spaces. Additionally, drivers should select helmets tailored to their specific application; for instance, a Dirt Track helmet differs in construction and ventilation from an open wheel asphalt racing helmet. Proper selection ensures optimal safety and performance on the track.

    admin

    • Dual certification means that most Bell helmets are labeled as both Snell and FIA certified, ensuring compliance with U.S. (e.g., Snell SA2020, Snell SA2025) and international motorsport regulations (e.g., FIA 8859-2015, FIA 8859-2024, FIA 8860). This allows racers to participate in a wide range of competitions without needing multiple helmets, providing versatility and convenience.

      admin
