Racing Helmets

Start with what you race and the rating your rulebook requires: Snell SA2025 or FIA 8859 for most car racing, FIA 8860 for top-level series, Snell K2025 for adult karting, and Snell/FIA CMR for young kart racers. Then choose the shape and features you want, such as full face, open face or carbon fiber.

Many adult karting classes accept Snell SA rated car helmets as well as Snell K helmets, so check your series rulebook first. Kids are different: young kart racers usually need a youth-specific helmet rated Snell/FIA CMR or CMS, which is lighter to reduce the strain on a child's neck.

A racing helmet should fit snugly all around, with no pressure points and no movement when you shake your head. Measure around your head about one inch above your eyebrows, compare it with the size chart on each product page, and try the helmet on before you remove any tags.

Replace it after any significant impact, even if no damage shows. Many sanctioning bodies also accept helmets only for a set number of years after their rating standard is released, often about ten for Snell. Check your series rulebook for the ratings it currently allows.
