However, as safety concerns began to grow, many switched to one-piece racing suits – though these were made from flammable cotton. It wasn’t until Niki Lauda’s firey 1976 crash at the Nurburgring that we saw flame-retardant racing suits made from proban or nomex being mandated in motorsports.
